George Peniston
Double Bass (No. 4)
Originally from Sheffield, George studied with Adrian Beers at the Royal Northern College of Music then trained as a schoolteacher at Manchester University (also qualifying as a football referee). He moved to Glasgow to join the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and worked there for six years before joining the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1987.
While a student he was a prizewinner in the Shell/LSO Competition and performed a concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed the Koussevitsky Concerto with a semi-professional orchestra in Sheffield.
George has been closely involved with the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s education work for over 20 years and has visited countless primary, secondary and special needs schools demonstrating the double bass, as well as taking part in numerous projects in the local community.
George enjoys touring with the Orchestra, and can always be relied on for a map and restaurant suggestions. He spends as much time as possible playing and following golf, and is a lifetime supporter of Sheffield Wednesday.
