GCSE Wider Listening: Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5: Finale
After performing the final movement from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5 in our GCSE BrightSparks concert, we have created this wider listening resource to help you teach, learn about, and develop students' listening skills ahead of exams.
This resource based on the fourth movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 is designed to develop your students’ listening skills which are essential across all GCSE Music exam boards. The worksheet encourages students to answer questions whilst listening to an unknown excerpt of the music a few times round, similar to listening sections in GCSE exam papers. Alongside this, there is an answer sheet for teachers to use as marking guidance once the students have completed the task. We encourage you to get creative with the ways you use this resource, whether that be as a listening test or as a whole class activity!
Fancy a speedy version of this task? Or perhaps you’d like to delve a little deeper into Tchaikovsky’s music… Why not take a look at the video below? Challenge your class to take notes on each version of the main theme, comparing and contrasting the instrumentation, character, and any other musical elements!
This resource was created by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. BrightSparks 2025/26 is generously funded by Rothschild Foundation, Candide Trust, Dunard Fund, Rivers Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, TIOC Foundation, Gill and Julian Simmonds, and Mrs Philip Kan.
