LPO at Saffron Hall, 29 Sep

Repertoire

  • Wagner Tannhäuser Overture
  • Grieg Piano Concerto
  • Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4

Performers

  • Edward Gardner conductor
  • Benjamin Grosvenor piano

'There is not a note in this symphony which I did not feel deeply, and which did not serve as an echo of sincere impulses within my soul', wrote Tchaikovsky of his fourth.

It seems to capture the very essence of the composer – stormy and impassioned, with an achingly tender slow movement and playful dance rhythms that could come straight from a ballet score.

Wagner’s overture encapsulates the whole world of his opera in less than fifteen minutes, whilst Grieg’s lyrical, folk-inflected concerto – played here by the outstanding Benjamin Grosvenor – has won the hearts of audiences and pianists everywhere. A concert celebrating three of the great Romantic composers at the peak of their expressive powers.
