Volume 3 documents a productive 3 years recording of Elgar’s oeuvre 1950-1953, notably including the rarely heard Pomp and Circumstance No.1 recorded at the opening of the Royal Festival Hall in 1951. Sir Adrian Boult observed that ‘Elgar’s interpretations of his works varied more from year to year than any other composer-conductor.’ Similarly, no two recordings or performances of his own works were the same – similarly, each time Sir Adrian Boult conducted Elgar’s work, it was with fresh interpretation, making recordings in this release a unique experience on their own.
The release is accompanied by insightful notes by Andrew Neill, former Chairman of the Elgar Society (1992-2008).
