Passion and playfulness collide.
‘Peace, peace in the lark’s song, in the gusts of the wind, in the waves of grass!’ runs the poem that inspired Webern’s gorgeous Im Sommerwind, as all of nature echoes the artist’s dreams. Robert Schumann’s lovely Piano Concerto is filled with coded love-messages to his wife Clara, and if any pianist can bring out both its passion and its playfulness, it’s Javier Perianes – hailed by The Times for his ‘evident modesty and utter brilliance’. Finally, Brahms cuts loose in the exuberant song and dance of his First Piano Quartet – rebooted in full orchestral colour by Webern’s teacher, Schoenberg.

Perianes played with such grace that it seemed as if his hands were floating over the keys.
