Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921–2006) was one of the most fascinating characters to have emerged from the creative core of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, leaving his post as the ensemble’s Principal Trumpet in 1953 as his career as a composer began its ascendency. Arnold’s remarkable and varied output is seasoned with scores dedicated to the Orchestra and its players; this collection conducted by the composer’s champion Vernon Handley offers a glance at Arnold the cinematic artist, Arnold the jocular humorist and Arnold the profound symphonist.
