Busoni’s opera Doktor Faust is unquestionably one of the experimental operatic masterpieces of the 20th century. The composer wrote his own libretto and worked on the composition for nearly two decades, although it remained unfinished on his death in 1924. Completed the following year by Busoni’s pupil, Philipp Jarnach, this 1959 BBC broadcast features a superb cast of soloists including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Heather Harper and Richard Lewis.

Sung in German.

Please note that after production of this CD, it has emerged that this is a shortened version of the opera created by the BBC for transmission in 1959.
