Dvořák Symphonic Variations
Dvořák Symphony No. 8

Sir Charles Mackerras conductor
London Philharmonic Orchestra

Sir Charles Mackerras (1925–2010) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra shared a musical heritage spanning 45 years. Mackerras’s debut performance with the Orchestra in 1958 began with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, and in 2003 he made what would be his final appearance with the Orchestra conducting Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. This live recording of Dvořák’s Symphonic Variations and Symphony No. 8 from 1992 pays tribute to a partnership that exuded a joy and vivacity in music-making that lives on in the memory of the Orchestra and its audience, and can now be discovered and cherished anew.
