‘Is it all an empty dream, or has this life of ours, and our death, a meaning?’ So begs the question at the start of Mahler’s Second Symphony. Over five movements Mahler grapples with both metaphysical and spiritual uncertainty before evangelically concluding ‘An overwhelming love lightens our being. We know, and are’. Here the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski give a spellbinding performance of Mahler’s great ‘Resurrection’ Symphony recorded live at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.
