These works by two Late Romantic titans offer vastly different experiences of married life: the domestic bliss of a family at the turn of the 20th Century; and the captivating world of the young bride, Scheherazade, whose stories saved her from execution. Conductor Zubin Mehta brings his signature touch to Rimsky-Korsakov’s rich melodies to conjure the intoxicating world of the One Thousand and One Nights, bringing to life tales of Sinbad’s adventures on the high seas, a prince in disguise, and a bustling bazaar. Richard Strauss’s Symphonia Domestica, a heartfelt ode to domestic life, may be on the surface less adventurous, but in grand, lush tones it paints a vibrant picture of daily life for the Strauss family.
