Sibelius himself said that ‘other composers mix cocktails – I offer cold, pure water’. His music undoubtedly evokes the physical and spiritual essence of his native Finland like no other. On this live concert recording from London’s Royal Festival Hall, Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Sibelius’s colourful tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter and the breathtaking Fifth Symphony with its stirring final ‘Swan Hymn’, alongside Lutosławski’s scintillating, folklore-inspired Concerto for Orchestra of 1954.
