Cuban-American composer Tania León brought her bold, vibrant voice to the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Composer-in-Residence (2023–25) – premiering ground-breaking works alongside mentoring our LPO Young Composers.
Her evocative Horizons (1999) mesmerised audiences at its UK premiere, while Raíces (2024) – a vivid fusion of Latin rhythms and jazz – explores León’s multi-cultural heritage. The Pulitzer-winning Stride (2020) honours US feminist pioneer Susan B. Anthony’s legacy, blending Caribbean and orchestral traditions with electrifying energy. Closing her residency, Pasajes (2025) painted a jubilant sonic portrait of León’s Cuban childhood – each piece propelling her as a defining voice of 21st-century orchestral music.

Reviews
[On Pasajes] ... Gardner and the LPO gave a precise and energetic performance, with convincing confidence in its challenging rhythms.
Bachtrack
[On Horizons] ... Structured as much by textures as by themes, it said much in ten minutes. The composer was present and clearly appreciated the dedicated playing of the LPO under Principal Guest Conductor Karina Canellakis.
