Dutch conductor Eduard van Beinum left an indelible mark on the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Post-war Britain, aiding its recovery from the hardships of war. In particular he introduced Mahler’s works to the LPO, and dedicated his time to British repertoire, and recorded Elgar’s The Wand of Youth Suites with the Orchestra, pioneering the use of tape technology.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a cherished composition, received a new lease of life through van Beinum’s collaboration with cellist Anthony Pini – the cellist’s lyrical prowess and van Beinum’s guidance yielding a recording that rivals esteemed versions by artists like Pablo Casals and Paul Tortelier.

The release is accompanied by insightful notes by Andrew Neill, former Chairman of the Elgar Society (1992-2008).

The LPO wishes to thank Philip Stuart, the David Michell estate, and
Jonathan Summers at the British Library for facilitating this release.
