Evan Williams: Woven in Tears
Performed by Musicians of the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Evan Williams (born 1988) is a Chicago-born composer and conductor whose music draws on influences ranging from Medieval chant to contemporary pop, exploring the boundaries between beauty and unease, joy and sorrow, while engaging with urgent social and political themes.
Woven in Tears was composed especially for the ‘With Every Fiber’ exhibit at Grace Farms, a cultural and humanitarian centre in New Canaan, Connecticut. It was written in response to a portrait by artist Hannah Rose Thomas of Nasreen Sheikh – Nepali activist, modern slavery survivor and founder of The Empowerment Collective. The piece weaves together musical material from John Dowland’s Renaissance air ‘Flow, My Tears’ and traces a journey from lament to liberation.
This recording was made by musicians of the London Philharmonic Orchestra: Kate Oswin and Claudia Tarrant-Matthews (violins), Martin Wray (viola), Kristina Blaumane (cello) and Clíodna Shanahan (piano).
