Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin and the Wooden Prince

Béla Bartók
The Miraculous Mandarin Suite
The Wooden Prince

Edward Gardner conductor
London Philharmonic Orchestra

Captured live in concert at the Royal Festival Hall, these recordings illustrate the close artistic partnership between the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Edward Gardner. Bartók’s The Wooden Prince and The Miraculous Mandarin Suite come from a fascinating period in the composer’s career, reflecting a shift from the lush, expansive soundworld of late Romanticism towards the leaner, more rhythmically driven style for which he became known. Gardner and the Orchestra illuminate both sides of Bartók’s musical personality, while tracing the evolution of one of the 20th century’s most distinctive voices.
