In 2021 our five LPO Young Composers debuted five new pieces, each inspired by the turbulent and isolating pandemic time.
Brett Dean, LPO Composer-in-Residence and mentor for the Young Composers programme, guided the composers through the creative process over the course of the year. The performance was conducted by Jack Sheen.
Filmed at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall with a socially distanced orchestra and audience, these works were performed by an ensemble comprising LPO players and Foyle Future First musicians. It was the first live concert many had experienced after almost a 2-year hiatus.
The Young Composers and works featured are:
- Geoffrey King – patina (this is truly a golden age)
- Alexander Tay – Witherbud
- Paweł Malinowski – declined/restored\elapsed
- Robin Haigh – SLEEPTALKER
- Sun Keting – that which is unseen…
The video playlist features an introduction from Brett Dean, followed by all five new pieces, each introduced by its composer.
